Italian Philology Student Wins the "Prawo w tłumaczeniu" Competition

Legal translation requires not only excellent language skills but also precision, attentiveness and the ability to navigate specialised terminology. These skills were brilliantly demonstrated by Daria Pakoca, a first-year MA student in Italian Philology at the University of Lodz and a member of the GIROL'AMO Student Translation Club, who won the 9th edition of the "Prawo w tłumaczeniu" [Law in Translation] competition in the Italian language category.

The competition is organised by the Juris-linguistics Student Science Club at the University of Warsaw and annually brings together students from across Poland interested in specialised translation. This year's edition generated considerable interest, with 36 entries submitted, covering eight languages and participants representing ten Polish universities. The University of Lodz submitted the largest number of entries.

The participants' task was to translate a lawsuit seeking a contractual penalty into a chosen foreign language. This demanding challenge tested not only their language skills but also their ability to accurately convey the nature of the legal text and adhere to appropriate translation conventions.

Daria Pakoca’s success demonstrates how important it is for translators to acquire skills both through academic studies and through participation in student science clubs. Congratulations!
